Lakes, Fishing, & Tupelo Honey
The city’s name comes from the Seminole Indian word meaning “water eyes.” A view from the sky above reveals two almost perfectly round lakes along the edge of town that look like a pair of eyes and make a special backdrop to the city’s downtown Lake Alice Park.
The Dead Lakes offer some of the best bass fishing in the nation and hosts tournament anglers from all over the world. Wewahitchka is also the site of one of Florida’s largest beekeeping operations and the site of the 1997 Peter Fonda movie “Ulee’s Gold.” The town celebrates Tupelo Honey with a two-day festival each May.
